Will You Build Compassion?

Meet our friend, Lee Brignone!    Click on Lee's picture for a video!

Lee and Julio Brignone and their son J.C. were one of the families in Pass Christian left homeless. They have lived in temporary housing including a formaldehyde-ridden FEMA trailer and now a MEMA cottage for the past 2-1/2 years. After helping numerous other families rebuild and get back on their feet, Lee and her husband were finally in a position to start to rebuild their own home six months ago. Then in late February 2008, Julio suddenly suffered a massive heart attack at the age of 53 and passed away. Not only is Lee grieving the loss of her husband and J.C. the loss of his father, they have no insurance to help finance the completion of their home. That’s where Compassion Cottages comes in! We have committed to finish Lee’s house by the end of June 2008! Join us in this compassion project by donating your time or resources. Hurricane Katrina devastated the lives of thousands of Gulf Coast residents. While the timeline for recovery is lengthy, Compassion Cottages is committed for the long haul -- making a difference by restoring hope -- one family at a time!  To read Lee's story in her own words and see more pictures select the 'Lee's story' link on the right. We had the awesome opportunity to meet Lee on a recent trip to the Pass, May 6-7, 2008!

Our Mission

Compassion Cottages, Inc. is a Barrington, Illinois area coalition of community church groups, service organizations and citizens dedicated to providing housing and services to assist families living in the Pass Christian, MS area of the Gulf Coast devastated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.  After the storm, 2,200 of Pass Christian's 2,600 homes were completely destroyed or unhabitable after the storm.  Now, two and a half years later, there are still nearly 300 FEMA trailers in Pass Christian.

Our mission is to restore hope and build community in Pass Christian through raising awareness of the ongoing need for humanitarian aid for residents of this area as well as construct modular housing that restores dignity through appealing and structurally sound architecture.

Our Vision

Our vision is to relationally transform two communities: Barrington and Pass Christian.  Further, our hope is to inspire other communities across the country to mobilize in the restoration of these areas as well and undergo similar relationally transforming experiences.
